Getting started with Moon magick

Since ancient times, the Lunar Goddess has reigned as the feminine force of the Moon. The Moon’s divine energy is a great force which we draw power and strength from during rituals and lunar magick plays an important role for us as we honour the Goddesses, utilising each lunar phase within our spell workings and rituals to invoke spiritual energy.

The Moon harnesses the power of ultimate divine feminine energy. Its association with the Goddess helps us and provides powerful energy for spells, magic, divination, love and truth seeking. Lunar magick can assist in an abundance of magickal workings – empowerment, personal growth, strength, divination, love, wishes, peace and balance, abundance, dream workings, wishes, banishing and protection spells and esbats. Call upon your chosen Moon Goddess (Artemis, Hathor, Isis, Diana, Luna, Selene or Astarte) and invoke the strength and power of the Moon and all of her magick during rituals and spell workings.

In Pagan and Wiccan traditions, the New Moon is often celebrated with divination and personal workings. When the Moon wanes, it is a time of reflection and introspective thinking and when the Moon waxes it is a time to receive what you have sowed. Once the New Moon begins to wax (meaning it gets bigger), the start of receiving begins. This is the perfect time to start new things and is also a wonderful occasion to unleash your intentions and manifestations.

The few days leading up to the New Moon are the most powerful days to set your intentions. Then when the New Moon hits and begins to wax, you can expect your energy and manifesting efforts to be magnified by the New Moon. This is similar to planting a seed. So don’t expect instant results. Like a plant, the fruits may not come to bear until months down the line. It’s not enough to simply think about what you desire. You have to turn that thought into physical evidence. On the day of the New Moon, write down your intentions. You may choose to do so in a special journal or you may take a piece of paper and keep it safe. It’s important you handwrite it and not type it out.

Remember you’re setting intentions, and not asking for wishes to be granted. This means that you have to put in some effort. Meditate, keep clear of negative thought, purify your mind and body, focus your energy on your intentions, day dream vividly about what would it feel, look, smell, and taste like if your intention came true. Look for the opportunities the Universe is throwing at you. Don’t just sit back and think that what you want will just fall onto your lap the instant the Moon goes dark.

When setting your intentions focus on what you need most immediately and if you’re new to manifesting and New Moon rituals, maybe start small. Wishing for world peace is probably not going to happen in a one-month cycle. Choose your intentions wisely. As a beginner, choose just 1 intention. Examples may include a new job, reconnecting with lost friends, creating a garden, finding inner bliss, or improved financial status. If you start piling all your intentions onto a single New Moon and end up with a never-ending wish list of wants, you can be assured that almost nothing will happen. So pick wisely from your menu of desires. And don’t overeat. You’ll just end up bloated.

There are so many different New Moon rituals which you can choose from. Some involve choosing the right colours, candles, and incense while others involve deep meditation. Do what feels right for you. If you’re looking for something more simple, here are a few simple tips.

  • A few days before the New Moon, keep your body and mind pure. This means no negative thinking, drop the gossiping, eat right (avoid fast food), and continue with whatever spiritual or personal growth practices you’re doing. This could be meditation, creative visualization, or reading. During this time think about what you truly want to manifest.
  • On the day of the New Moon, go outside where you are physically connected to nature. The Moon after all is an element of nature. If possible, find a place near water and light a candle. This way you’ll be surrounded by all four elements: fire, water, air, and earth.
  • Sitting in a quiet spot, relax yourself by focusing on your breath or doing a short meditation.
  • Once you feel sufficiently relaxed, take out your journal or a piece of paper and handwrite your intentions. Don’t feel silly if you’ve put down smaller intentions, such as, “I intend to make my roses bloom.” After you finish you may recite your intentions followed by an affirmation such as, “I will receive the things that I have intended.”

You can do this same ritual to harness the power of the Full Moon too!

All Full Moons are packed with power and people handle this intense energy in different ways. It’s no coincidence (or surprise) that people go a little crazy during a Full Moon. Around the time of the Full Moon if you been feeling ”buzzing”, or if there is an excitement or an unsettled feeling in your belly, you’ve had trouble sleeping or experienced vivid (or lucid) dreams, or you feel overwhelmed blame it on the energy of the Full Moon!

Just as the Full Moon lights up the night sky, so too it lights up and magnifies energies you’re working on releasing so you can move forward. If you take time to ground yourself and set your intentions she will help you gain clarity by illuminating your path and direction. If life has felt a little out of hand, have no fear the energies will begin to calm and your feet will be solidly on the ground again. A Full Moon can turn your world upside down or give you a boost forward. It all depends on what you do with the energy.

The power of a Full Moon is an exhilarating time to consciously let go of fear, set your intentions and put dreams in motion for the future. There is a magickal quality about setting intentions on a Full Moon night. What you put in motion now is carried into the universe to start the process and give you clarity in which direction to go. What better time than under the bright, beautiful light of an event that only happens “Once in a Blue Moon”? This phenomena happens when there are two Full Moons in one calendar month, and this wonderful event happens only once every 2.7 years! Every civilization, culture and many religions have some type of Full Moon ritual. You too can create your very own personal ritual that honours the energy of the Full Moon and the energy within YOU.

Have fun with it… go out and howl at it… stand under the night sky and embrace the energy of the moon to empower you! Bring it down to help ground you. Use it to illuminate a path you haven’t noticed before. Set dreams in motion with the intention that whatever happens is for the highest good of all involved. If there’s something you’ve wanted to do “once in a Blue Moon” now is your chance! Bring the light of the Moon into you to clear out any darkness. Once you’ve created a Full Moon ritual for yourself don’t forget that although the Moon is usually full only once a month there is magick not just once but every time in a Blue Moon.
